Looking for the most secret Mayan places? If so, a private Coba ruins tour is a great choice to explore some of the most remarkable archeological sites of México with a real sense of adventure.

The Yucatan Peninsula has increasingly become a quite popular destination, due to its beautiful coastal resorts, but also because of the great number of Mayan archaeological sites you can explore here.

Undoubtedly, Chichen Itza or Tulum’s walled city are the most accessible places and therefore the most visited by tourists. And this is precisely why Coba Mayan ruins are so special.

Before you can see the most impressive structures hidden in this place, you need to go deep inside the jungle, just as if you were an authentic explorer. Also, you can find some other natural treasures, such as the magical cenotes.

How do I get to Coba Mayan ruins?

Even when they are located deep in the rainforest area of the Yucatan Peninsula, Coba ruins are actually not far from any of the most touristic towns of the Riviera Maya.

For example, if you stay in Tulum, you’ll be 47 kilometers from Coba ruins, so you can perfectly explore the main attractions of the archeological site and the surroundings in one day.

If you decide to rent a car to drive from Tulum to Coba, the travel time will be about 40 minutes, driving along Highway 109. You can also take a bus, in which case, you’ll be arriving in 1 hour.

For those traveling from Playa del Carmen or Cancun, the ride can take 2 or 3 hours respectively. However, there’s no need to worry because you can enjoy a Coba ruins excursion from these cities in one day too.

Just note that, if you choose public transport to get to Coba ruins, you’ll have to deal with a larger number of tourists than if you rent a car or take a private Coba ruins tour.

When is the best time to visit Coba ruins?

Coba archaeological site is open from 8 am to 5 pm. However, take for granted that if you visit the ruins at noon, you’ll definitely find yourself surrounded by a large crowd of tourists.

For this reason, the best time to explore Coba ruins is early in the morning. This way, you’ll get to the main Mayan structures of the complex before other tourists, which is also perfect to take the best pictures with no distractions.

Another great advantage is that the heat is less intense at this time of day, so you’ll be able to enjoy the exploration without getting so exhausted.

Best things to do during a private Coba ruins tour

Clearly, as its name indicates, the archaeological complex of Coba is home to some of the most important constructions of the Mayan civilization, which have nothing to envy to other tourist sites, such as Chichen Itza or Tulum.

The main attraction, of course, is the Nohoch Mul Pyramid, not just for being the largest pyramid in all the Yucatan Peninsula, but also because it is actually the only Mayan structure which can be climbed nowadays.

The experience of reaching the top of the pyramid is unique, since you can appreciate the greatness and splendor of the Mayan jungle.

However, climbing this pyramid is not the only adventure you can experience during a private Coba ruins tour.

Enjoy a Coba ruins and cenote tour

What makes Coba ruins so different from other sites is that it is much closer to nature. Therefore, a Coba ruins expedition wouldn’t be complete without a day of adventure in the cenotes.

Cenotes are natural sinkholes with access to fresh water that are usually hidden in caves and connected to underground rivers where you can swim and snorkel. Indeed, there are three cenotes just 10 minutes from Coba ruins.

1. Cenote Tamcach-Ha

This cenote is ideal if you are looking for an uncrowded place to cool off after a day exploring the ruins.

To access this place, you must make your way through a small opening in the floor, to then find a perfectly round cavern with two jumping platforms of 5 and 10 meters of height.

The water in this cenote is deep blue and the temperature is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

2. Cenote Choo-Ha

A second alternative not often visited by tourists is Cenote Choo-Ha. This cenote is also located inside an underground cavern and to access this place you must cross a steep terrain surrounded by dense vegetation.

Unlike the Tamcach-Ha cenote, this place has numerous rock formations, whose dramatic appearance will leave you fascinated. Also, the water is not so deep, which makes it a good option for small children or beginner swimmers.

3. Cenote Multum-Ha

Of the three cenotes closest to Coba ruins, this is the most isolated, but also one of the best for diving. To reach this place, you must go much deeper into the jungle and enter through a small opening between the rocks.

The entrance is quite narrow and surrounded by rock formations, making it the most difficult to access. Once inside, you’ll find an underground cavern with a small hole in the roof that allows natural light to enter.
