Do you want to know why Coba ruins, from all the archeological sites in Mexico, are particularly special?

In recent years, Coba ruins have become increasingly recognized by visitors, mainly because of the natural beauty of the surrounding area and the well-preserved Mayan structures of the site.

But, thanks to its remote location, this place is by far less crowded than other popular Mayan sites, like Chichen Itza or Tulum, making the experience of exploring Coba ruins very unique and private.

Also, since much of the Coba archeological site hasn’t been excavated yet, during your visit, you’ll feel like you were the one who is discovering the place for the very first time.

Are you ready to see what awaits you in this incredible site? In this point, we’ve put together all the details you need to know before exploring the Coba Mayan ruins.

Which are the best ways to explore Coba ruins?

One of the things that makes Coba ruins so interesting is that there are at least three different ways to explore this wonderful place.

1. Walking. Exploring Coba ruins on foot is perfect if you enjoy hiking. Here you’ll find a vast territory full of native trees and wildlife that you can admire during the walk.

Just keep in mind that to reach the main Mayan structures, you’ll have to hike at least 1-2 miles round trip, which can be exhausting if you’re not accustomed to long routes or the jungle heat.

2. Renting a bike. As soon as you enter the archaeological complex, you can rent your own bicycle. This is one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to explore Coba ruins since the road surface is quite flat.

Also, if you’re good enough at cycling, this will be your best chance to beat the crowds, get first to the majority of ruins and take the best pictures.

3. Hiring a cart. Also known as a “bici taxi”, this is a vehicle with two seats in the front while the driver sits in the back and pedals. Although it is quite a comfortable choice, note that it only goes to the main pyramid and back.

This solution is ideal for families with small children, who will not get tired and will have a lot of fun.

Climb the Nohoch Mul Pyramid at Coba ruins

With no doubts, the main act of a Coba ruins tour is climbing the Nohoch Mul Pyramid located in the center of the complex.

This 42-meter-height Mayan building is made of 120 stone steps that are much steeper than they really look. Because of this, there is a thick rope descending down the middle of the pyramid which you can hold on to for safety.

If you conquer to reach the top, you’ll find a stunning jungle landscape which expands through all directions. The greatness of the view is absolutely worth the climb.

Nohoch Mul Pyramid is also one of the few Mayan ruins that can still be climbed, since when archaeological sites become more touristy, the authorities end up restricting the access to prevent damages.

Just don’t be overconfident on your way back down, because coming down from the pyramid is more difficult than going up.

Take your time to explore beyond the main pyramid

Besides the adventure of climbing the famous Nohoch Mul pyramid, Coba ruins have many other natural treasures to observe.

For example, there is the Coba Group, a cluster of structures near the entrance where you’ll find visible remains of paints, huge stelae representing religious and political figures, a display of hieroglyphs and two well-preserved ball courts.

Also, you’ll be able to see the white trade routes called “sacbe”, which were strategically built to transport goods through the most important urban centers, especially at night.

According to experts, the Mayans used white limestone to form these roads, so that, taking advantage of the moonlight, the travelers’ route got illuminated.

Get in contact with nature and dive into the nearby cenotes

What makes Coba ruins different from other archaeological sites is the astonishing nature that abounds around it. Once you begin your excursion, you’ll notice that the lush greenery and wildlife will catch your senses at every moment.

This area is also full of beautiful natural sources, such as the cenotes, natural sinkholes with access to fresh. There are more than 6 thousand of these magical sites all around the Yucatan Peninsula.

Indeed, just 10 minutes from Coba ruins, you can find three cenotes, which are perfect to have a refreshing experience after a day trip of exploring the ruins.
