XOCHIMILCO & COYOACAN PRIVATE TOURS

Your English-speaking local expert will be waiting for you at your hotel or Airbnb lobby in Mexico City with a great smile at 10:00 a.m. We can change the pickup time if you wish.

We take the fastest, safest route to Coyoacán, arriving around 11:15 a.m. Since this is your private tour, we won’t make any additional stops unless you want to. On the way, your local expert shares stories about Mexico City, Mexican traditions and local life, and gives you space to relax — or sleep — during the ride. The van carries plenty of cold water for you.

Our first stop is Coyoacán, a word from the Nahuatl “Coyohuacan,” meaning “place possessed by coyotes.” This town played an important role during the conquest of Mexico and later became one of the most important towns of New Spain, thanks to its rich soil.

Places to visit include the Coyoacán Market, the Frida Kahlo Museum (not included in the standard tour, but we can add it — tickets are non-refundable once purchased), Jardín Centenario and the San Juan Bautista Church. Along the way you can enjoy the famous churros from Coyoacán.

Everything is done at your pace and you can stay in each place as long as you want. Your guide, fluent in English and certified by the INAH, gives an extensive narrative about the sites and loves answering questions.

After Coyoacán, we continue to a magical place hidden in the city that also played an important role during the conquest of Mexico — Lake Xochimilco. It was one of the most important lakes of that era and still carries on its farming tradition today.

Here you’ll take a ride on a “trajinera” boat through the canals, admiring the scenery while learning about the unique farming technique, the history and the legends of Xochimilco. You can also hire mariachis, sing, dance and try Mexican snacks sold from other boats — quesadillas, esquites (corn cups), even pulque.

The ride takes 3 hours; the boat can make stops around the canals for restrooms when needed. We provide traditional Mexican snacks for the ride, and you’re welcome to bring additional food or beer if you’d like.

When you’re ready, we head back to your hotel or Airbnb — traffic into the city can add 45 to 60 minutes to the ride. The tour is planned to be back around 6:00 p.m., but since everything runs at your pace, the exact return time is up to you. You’re free to head back early or skip any activity you don’t want to do.
